Interest in manufacturing biodiesel, the
transesterification of plant and / or animal oils into a diesel fuel, is growing
daily. Biodiesel is currently being manufactured and marketed here in
Sarasota County.
On the surface, the chemistry appears simple, but
as with any chemical reaction, the process involves compounds, some of which are
potentially toxic and create hazardous wastes.
To help better understand the process and the
associated risks involved with manufacturing biodiesel, the Sarasota County
Hazardous Waste Management office has developed a biodiesel
Best Management Practices
document that provides guidance in managing
materials used and required waste disposal procedures.
In addition to the online guidance document, an
enhanced version of the document is available at the Selby Environmental
Library. The enhanced document included publications from the United
States Environmental Protection Agency.
Should you have any additional questions
regarding the proper storage and / on disposal of manufactured biodiesel wastes
or any other potentially hazardous item. call 941-861-5000 and ask for the
Hazardous Waste Management office.
