Team Up For Fire Safety - Smoke
Detector Program
Smoke detection is the first line of defense for our
constituency in giving early warning that a smoke or fire
condition exists within their homes. As we continue to work
towards a fire safe community and helping those in need of a
smoke detector for their home, the Fire Prevention Bureau along
with the Suppression Division have been very proactive with the
fire department’s Smoke Detector Program.
During the past few years, over 250 smoke detectors have been
installed by fire department personnel upon request of a
homeowner or tenant. In addition to installing the detector, we
provide the opportunity for a home safety inspection. We are
always available to answer questions or hear concerns about fire
and life safety issues.
National Fire Prevention Week
The history of the National Fire Prevention Week has its roots
in the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 9, 1871.
Our annual October event gives the community the opportunity to
meet the Sarasota County Emergency Services personnel. Every
year approximately 2500 + friends and family attend. The
opportunity for some hands on training and fun appeals to
everyone involved.
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure.” Truer words were never spoken when it comes to
Fire Prevention. Among the many measures that can be taken to
reduce fire loss, burns, and accidental injury perhaps none is
more important than that of fire prevention education. |
