Nora Patterson is serving her third on the Sarasota County
Commission. She was first elected in 1998.

Background
Mrs. Patterson brings a diverse background to her
office. She attended Duke University and holds a BA in
Psychology and a post graduate degree in Educational
Psychology from the University of Florida. Her first job was
as a teacher.
A native of New York City, Mrs. Patterson and her husband,
John, moved to Sarasota in 1970.
They became very active in the community and served on the
boards of numerous civic organizations. They also co-owned
and operated a garden center and raised their daughter,
Kimberly. After selling her business, Mrs. Patterson became
a real estate broker/salesperson.
City of Sarasota Commission
She was elected to the Sarasota City Commission in 1991 and
served two four-year terms. During her tenure, she held a
seat on the Manasota League of Cities, which she chaired for
two years, and she served on the executive board of
directors of the Florida League of Cities.
Mrs. Patterson served as Mayor of the City of Sarasota from
1994-95. She was appointed by the Governor and served two
years on Florida’s Legislative Committee on
Intergovernmental Relations from 1996-98.

“Community Youth Development Leadership Award” and the
“Visionary Award” from Jewish Family and Children's
Services
- Received, with her
husband, the “She Knows Where She's Going Visionary
Award” from Girls Inc. of Sarasota County in 2005
- Chosen as Siesta Key’s
“Citizen of the Year” in 2003 by the Siesta Key
Association
- Named a “Women in Power”
in 2001 for her leadership by the National Council of
Jewish Women of Sarasota/Manatee
Commissioners are elected at large for four-year
terms. Sarasota County is divided into five districts
and commissioners are designated by the district where
